How to install shelf brackets like a pro

Free up more space in your home with shelf brackets

In today’s homes, storage is one of the most important considerations. Space is often limited, and it can be hard to find a way to display all of your most treasured items and possessions.

Decorative shelf brackets offer a practical and stylish storage solution. Whether you like the look of floating shelves or fancy something a little more robust to use as a clothing rack, shelf brackets are ideal for storing everyday essentials and adding character to your home.

Here’s our step-by-step guide to installing new brackets and shelving by yourself – no handyman required.

At Carinya, we provide shelving solutions for trade professionals and DIY projects. Discover our range of shelf brackets in store at Bunnings.

1. Choose a style that matches your décor

Are you a minimalist who likes a clean and contemporary finish? Or would you consider yourself someone who is drawn to intricate, vintage designs?

The good news is the world of shelf brackets is vast, and there’s bound to be something that suits your taste. From sleek and unobtrusive lipped shelf brackets to classic and elegant decorative scroll brackets, the options are extensive.

In most cases, you can choose a finish for your shelf brackets as well. Think pearl powder coated, white powder coated and black powder coated styles that will add a splash of interest or integrate seamlessly into your home or office.

Different bracket styles provide different amounts of strength and stability so be sure to determine your weight-bearing needs ahead of time. Think about the use of your shelves as well as their appearance and how close they are to power sockets and furniture. There’s no point in mounting a shelf to hold a reading lamp if it’s not close to the plug.

How to install shelf brackets

2. Decide where to install your new brackets and shelving

Shelf brackets are expertly designed and engineered to meet high standards of quality and consistency. However, they cannot be installed on any type of surface or wall. When thinking about where to install your new decorative shelf brackets, always remember that:

  • Brackets should only be attached to wall studs if you’re attaching them to plasterboard walls or brickwork/masonry (not mortar or grouting).
  • Appropriate heavy duty fasteners should always be used.
  • Plastic wall plugs should never be used to fix brackets to walls under any circumstances.

Next, check whether your shelf brackets are pre-drilled for fasteners. All of our Carinya range are pre-drilled and ideal for medium to heavy-duty shelving projects. Buying decorative shelf brackets that are pre-drilled will take the grunt work out of putting up shelves in any room of your house or office.

3. Gather your tools and get measuring

Before you start installing your shelf brackets, make sure you have the following tools ready to use:

  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Stud finder
  • High-quality wood screws
  • Power drill
  • Level
  • Pencil

Once you have your tools ready, measure the amount of space between your decorative brackets to determine where to place your shelves on the wall. Use a pencil to mark where the screws will be set.

4. Get drilling

Pre-drill small holes at the marks you have pencilled onto the wall. Screw the bracket screws into the predrilled holes until they are approximately 6mm away from the wall.

Line the pre-drilled holes on the back of your decorative bracket up with the bracket screws then push them gently into place. Ensure the shelf is flush against the wall by using a spirit level.

Finally, take your decorative shelf and position it on the freshly installed bracket.

5. Take a ‘shelfie’

Installing a new decorative shelf or set of brackets is something to celebrate so take a selfie – or ‘shelfie’ – with your newly installed unit as your first act of shelf-care.
